While in Washington, D.C. for the IAFF Legislative Conference in early March 2026, members of Professional Firefighters of Sonoma County, IAFF Local 1401, took the opportunity to visit the IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

In early March 2026, members of the Professional Firefighters of Sonoma County, IAFF Local 1401, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the IAFF’s Legislative Conference. Our delegation joined hundreds of firefighters from across the country to meet directly with members of Congress and push for policies that protect our health, safety, and families.

In the past 90 days, California has lost four firefighters to active-duty suicide.

Northern Sonoma County Fire has officially welcomed 10 new firefighters to its ranks, increasing staffing at the Geyserville and Cloverdale fire stations and reinforcing the fire district’s ability to respond to emergencies across the northern part of Sonoma County.

Last week, the Professional Firefighters of Sonoma County Local 1401 traveled to Sacramento to meet with state legislators and advocate for critical policies that protect firefighters on the job and into retirement.

This week, Local 1401 President Matt Tognozzi, Vice President Joe Stewart, and Santa Rosa Director Stephen Dal Porto traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 2025 IAFF Alfred K. Whitehead Legislative Conference. Nearly 800 IAFF members from across the country assembled to meet with members of Congress, lobbying for legislation that protects firefighter health, safety, and retirement benefits.

At the recent FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles, legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Santa Rosa Fire Department for their courageous efforts in saving her Pacific Palisades home during the Palisades Fire. Nicks, who had to evacuate during the fire, credited Santa Rosa firefighters for their relentless dedication in protecting not only her residence but also the surrounding community.

The Schell-Vista Fire Protection District is thrilled to welcome three new full-time firefighters: Mickey Breen, 54; George Norton, 30; and Jayden Filippi, 21. This historic expansion is made possible through funding from Sonoma County’s Measure H, a half-cent sales tax approved by voters in March 2024 to enhance fire prevention, protection, and emergency services countywide.

Sonoma County firefighters from L1401 have deployed to Southern California to help battle the devastating Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which have already burned thousands of acres. With experience from major wildfires like the Kincade and Tubbs Fires, these brave first responders are using their expertise to protect lives, homes, and communities under dangerous conditions.
